Adopting the following measures can help prevent athlete’s foot:

  • Maintain good foot hygiene. Keep feet clean every day. When washing, please use soap and water. Give special consideration to the areas between the toes.
  • Regularly wash bedding, towels, and socks in water with the temperature at least 140°F (60°C) or higher. One may also use disinfectant wipes to disinfect shoes.
  • Use an anti-fungal powder daily.
  • Keep towels, shoes, and socks to oneself. Do not share them.
  • When going to public showers or swimming pools, be sure to wear sandals.
  • Do not re-wear sweaty socks. Sweaty socks are gross. Change socks every day.
  • Allow feet to air at home. You can go barefoot at home.
  • Wear shoes produced from breathable materials.

Symptoms of Athlete's foot include:

  • Stinging, itching and burning sensations on the soles of the feet and between the toes.
  • Itching blisters on the feet
  • Cracking of the skin of the feet which often leads to skin peeling. Mostly between the toes.
  • The skin on the sides or the soles of the feet dries and falls off.
  • Some raw skin on bottoms of the feet.
  • Toenails become crumbly, thick and discolored.
  • Toenails are easily pulled from the nail bed.

Athlete’s foot arises from the growth of tinea fungus on the feet. A patient may contract the fungus after establishing direct contact with someone who has already been infected. One may also be infected after touching surfaces already contaminated by the fungus. The causative fungus lives and survives in moist, and warm environments, such as public swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms
